In the Spring of 1997, the founders of Delta Epsilon Sigma Iota began discussing the social state of Indian-American youths. Their remarks regarding the socially perceived character of Indian men varied in nature; ranging from agreeably positive to not very flattering. The negative attributes of their conversations began to evolve into an overwhelming concern for the general welfare of Indians. In efforts to address these concerns they decided to take action! The result was the creation of an organization with the aim of improving one's life in all aspects; in turn building strong confident young men who would raise the stature of the Indian-American community.

In the Fall of 1997, Sigma Delta Phi Epsilon (SDFE), a co-ed multicultural Greek-lettered organization, with the purpose to promote family life through diversity, agreed to help the future Indian Interest fraternity- DESI. SD-Phie's significant support and assistance came in the form of pledging the founders and guidance during the initial phases of establishing the fraternity. The six founders were Leejoe Pallickal, Rajesh Manglavil, Amar Jhaveri, Priyank Shah, George Isaac, and George Chacko.

On December 12, 1997 Delta Epsilon Sigma Iota established the Alpha Chapter as the first Indian interest fraternity at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York. Since that time with a strong emphasis on quality over quantity, eleven pledge classes have successfully become members of the Brotherhood of DESI. The most recent pledge class to complete the Member Education process was the Lambda Class of Fall 2008. The Beta chapter of DESI was established in New York City in the summer of 1999.

The currently active brothers and Alumni continue to represent the fraternity and the Indian community in a positive manner. During the course of it's five years, the fraternity has produced motivated individuals who continue the traditions and visions of our Founding Brothers; and work to lead the fraternity forward.
